  1. Thorny Devil is a small lizard found in the deserts and scrublands of Australia.
  2. It has a number of hard spikes all over its body which resemble thorns.
  3. They also have a false head with which they can mislead their predators.
  4. The Thorny Devil’s diet consists only black ants and nothing else.
  5. They locate an ant trail and simply sit and wait to lick the ants.
  6. They can change colour, staying pale when warm and becoming dark when cold.
  7. Little channels between their spikes collect water from dew and rainfall.
  8. Thorny Devils are active during day and rest at night.
  9. They have a slow, rocking gait and camouflage well into the desert.
  10. Females are slightly bigger than the males and also slightly paler in colour.
  11. They can live for about 12 – 20 years.
  12. They have a voracious appetite and can eat about 1000 ants at one go!
  13. They can lay about 3-10 eggs at a time and build nests underground.
  14. They are also known as Thorny Dragons, Mountain Devils, Thorny Lizard or Moloch.
  15. They can also puff up and appear larger than their normal size when threatened.
  16. Their main predators include large birds of prey such as the Brown Falcon.
