  1. Fire-Bellied toads are small-medium sized toads found in Europe and Northern and central Asia.
  2. They get their name from the brightly colored markings on their body especially on the underside.
  3. They inhabit the forests, woodlands, marshlands, swamps, farmlands and temperate rainforests.
  4. They also spend a lot of time in water from mountain streams, slow rivers, lakes and tiny freshwater.
  5. There are 8 species of fire-bellied toads in the world, varying slightly in color and size.
  6. They are so similar that particularly, two of the species have interbred and produced a fertile hybrid offspring.
  7. They are carnivores feeding on bugs, insects, spiders, larvae and worms.
  8. They catch their prey, like other frogs, by shooting out their long, sticky tongue.
  9. They have numerous natural predators in foxes, cats, snakes, lizards and birds.
  10. Interestingly, the skin of the fire-bellied toad is said to be toxic to humans and some other animals.
  11. They are known to mate in late spring and the females lay between 50-300 eggs.
  12. The eggs are sticky and joined together and are called toad spawn.
  13. It takes around 2 years for the tadpoles to fully transform into adults.
