  1. The brightly coloured Wrasse are found in all the major oceans of the world.
  2. They are small fish with distinctive thick lips and a mouth that extends forward.
  3. There are about 600 species of Wrasses each with their own characteristics.
  4. Wrasse are carnivores, eating small fish and invertebrates and hiding amidst reefs and rocks.
  5. They follow larger fishes, cleaning their mouths by picking out scales and food particles.
  6. Research shows that the Wrasse can live for about 3-10 years on an average.
  7. They are sexually dimorphic and can change their gender depending on their environment.
  8. Their main predators include larger fishes like lionfish, barracuda, dogfish and sharks.
  9. Female Wrasses lay thousands of eggs at a time and are hence not endangered.
  10. They are useful in fish farms as they eat up pests like sea lice.
  11. Wrasse is derived from the Cornish word for old woman – wragh.
