  1. The Common Toads are large species of toads found in Europe.
  2. Except for Iceland and some areas of the Mediterranean, they are found in water extending to Siberia and North Africa.
  3. They inhabit woodlands, forests, marshes and meadows that are close to water.
  4. They are most active in wet weather which are nocturnal, resting by the day and hunting at night.
  5. Their skin is rough looking and is permeable as with other toads.
  6. They are generally brown in color, but may also be found to be black, green or yellow.
  7. They are carnivores primarily feeding on insects and occasionally on worms and spiders.
  8. They catch their prey, in air, with the help of their long-sticky tongue.
  9. Their natural predators are grass snakes, hedgehogs, foxes, cats and birds of prey.
  10. They lay their eggs in water in long strings called toadspawn.
  11. The eggs hatch in water releasing the common toad tadpoles which metamorphose into common toads.
